Ticto Barb

The giant aquatic sculpture was first sighted in Melbourne swimming up the Yarra River as part of the Commonwealth Games festivities in 2006.

It represented Puntius ticto, a type of fresh-water fish native to Sri Lanka, and was one of 72 aquatic sculptures, each representing a different competing country.

Maroondah City Council obtained Ticto Barb at the end of the Games and arranged for its restoration and installation.  Ticto Barb is now on permanent display at the Ringwood Aquatic Centre.

Sri Lankan athletes trained in Maroondah during the Commonwealth Games.  The sculpture is a fitting reminder of the numerous cultural events held in Maroondah with the Sri Lankan community before and after the Games.
