Reconciliation Week
The local community was invited to participate in a range of free events and activities held during National Reconciliation Week. The purpose of this program was to acknowledge the traditional owners of the Maroondah land, learn about indigenous culture and heritage and celebrate reconciliation amongst all Australians.
The 2010 program included:
Reconciliation Week Launch
An opportunity to come together to recognise and celebrate Reconciliation in Australia.
The event included:
- A Welcome to Country/Smoking Ceremony
- Official Flag Raising Ceremony
- Launch of Council’s new Indigenous art acquisition “Tali” by Indigenous senior artist Ray Ken.
Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training Workshop
An opportunity to learn about Indigenous heritage and culture with a strong focus on learning about the traditional owners of the Maroondah land, the Wurundjeri People.
The workshop was facilitated by Senior Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Doreen Garvey-Wandin and Clare O’Kelly (All In Productions)
Indigenous Documentary Screening – The First Australians Episode 3 “Freedom for our Lifetime”
An opportunity to meet other members of the local community who are interested in learning more about Reconciliation.
A free screening was co-ordinated by Maroondah’s local Reconciliation group, Maroondah Movement for Reconciliation. If you would like to know more about this organisation, please contact Bob Heaton 9723 1646.
Student Workshops
An opportunity to participate in a range of arts-based activities to learn more about Indigenous art and culture.
A number of interactive workshops were conducted at local primary schools and Maroondah Federation Estate including didgeridoo playing, painting and storytelling.
