Karen Community Youth Group Art Project
The Eastern Karen Community Association of Victoria received funding to start an arts program for their youth members to learn about traditional and modern art practices and skills such as weaving and canvas painting.
The aim of the program is to provide Karen youth with a safe place to meet and to encourage them to engage in mainstream services such as Maroondah City Council’s Youth Services and the Migrant Information Centre (MIC). Through this art project participants were able to express their personal stories through a positive forum - an important process for the newly arrived refugees from Burma. The workshops were undertaken at EV’s Youth Centre in Croydon over several months and the participants were also involved in coordinating an exhibition of their artwork. The final pieces were showcased in an impressive exhibition at Croydon Hills Baptist Church, Croydon Hills.
