Croydon Tree Sculpture

Croydon Tree SculptureThe 80 year old cypress tree has had two human faces carved into two opposing sides of the upper trunk.  The face on the northern side of the tree looks out across the reserve, while the southern face looks upwards to the visitors perched on the branches.

The perching birds are sulphur-crested cockatoos, a bird that is commonly seen in the City of Maroondah. They are a social bird, with a cheeky attitude and are represented by flat aluminium cutouts painted in simple white, yellow and black. The metal is perforated to highlight the wing definition and give each bird a lighter weight with a partial transparency.

The tree was cut down due to structural failure caused by a storm about seven years ago.  Due to its size and prominent location, it was considered a prime candidate for public art.
