Community Art

What is community art?

Practical art-making undertaken by the community, under the direction of, and in collaboration with, a skilled arts worker to express a collective vision in a community setting.

What are the benefits of community art?

Community development is the main focus of the community art process. Collective decision making, ownership and control over the development and outcomes of the project are a high priority. It is through the communal process that a sense of collective identity, a sense of place and belonging is gained. Community art can allow people to express their concerns and goals or simply participate in their community.  With its roots in social justice, community art can also provide a communal process to trigger events and/or change.
