The Artful Lodger
SPIN (Supporting People in Need), a part of Community Inclusion Services at Eastern Access Community Health (EACH) received funding to develop their art program, The Artful Lodger. The project involved residents from Belden Lodge, a Supported Residential Service in Croydon North, in partnership with Unit One, a Maroondah Hospital psychiatric unit. Renowned art therapist Caroline Noel worked with 25 individuals from Belden Lodge and 8 patients from Unit One at Maroondah Hospital to create the stunning mosaic mandala through a series of workshops.
Through this project, the participants have felt increased feelings of self-esteem and confidence, a lesser sense of isolation, a willingness to participate in a greater number of community-based activities and have developed new arts skills. The mosaic mandala is now displayed in a communal space at Unit One and has enlivened the space immensely. Patients are now much more willing to utilise the newly revived area and have developed a great sense of pride and ownership of this space.
